In Six-String Heros, his fourth book, Neil Zlozower compiles photographs of top rock guitarists he has taken since he walked to the front of the stage with his camera as a 14-year old to get snapshots at a Rolling Stones concert in 1969. In the years since, he has become preeminent among rock photographers.

Zlozower has essentially used his photographic ability as a means of getting close to guitarists who play the music he loves. Over the years he has become friends with many of them, which has given him to get shots that other photographers could not get. During much of that time, he went to interviews with Steven Rosen, who has published articles in more than a dozen major publications, and took photographs afterward.

For Six-String Heroes, Zlozower was not content merely to compile photographs, so he collaborated with Rosen to combine the pictures with quotations from the interviews that Rosen had not used in his articles. The guitarists speak about the guitar, not so much how they play it as what it means to them and how it affected their lives.
Jimi Hendrix died at about the same time Zlozower started taking his camera to concerts, and for some reason Zlozower never took pictures of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Other than that, Six-String Heros includes most of the greatest and best-known rock guitarists of the past 40 years, shown in live performance, in studio portraits, and candid photographs.
